Hipsters on Food Stamps

They're young, they're broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that?

Read about it here.

What are your thoughts?

Eggs in a tree

Last week, while visiting my mom, she and I picked tomatoes from her garden.

Then she pointed out this small nest. It was built on a surprisingly low branch of a Japanese Maple in her yard.

This was what was inside. A beautiful blue egg and a hatchling! So fragile:

This week, I came back, curious to see what remained. The mother bird flew away when I came outside last week. I was worried she wouldn't come back, that I had screwed up the flow or something. But apparently she flies off only for brief periods, always to return (according to my mom who has been watching the birds). This was what I saw this Sunday.

They grow fast! Two little chicks, feathery and huge (compared to their state last week)!
Nature is amazing. Eggs are amazing.

Disjointed, but related, have you seen the specialty egg selection at Whole Foods? They have everything from giant Ostrich eggs to small purple speckled (not sure from what kind of bird) ones.

What on earth do you do with an Ostrich egg? Apparently one is equal to 20-24 chicken eggs, and the taste is not noticeably different.

Anyone try any of these unique eggs?

Feeling Salty

I love salty, savory foods. And lately, anything with fleur de sel piques my interest. But there comes a point in your diet where you need to step off the salt lick--when you retain so much water that your face becomes puffy and your eyes get super squinty. I think that point came for me one day this week when I was walking down the street and some guy yells to me, "Wow! Do you know you look just like Lucy Liu?!"

I responded with, "Okay, that's not exactly a compliment."

Daaaaaaamn.

Thought of the Day: The Only Reason Sandra Lee Has a Show

...is her camel toe. Or somewhere in Lubbock, there's a housewife buying a lot of taco seasoning packets, gallons of Stoli and grape juice for "cocktails", and hot glue sticks for "tablescapes". The combination artifice and processed wretchedness of this show is....stunning. Okay, so perhaps it isn't just the "toe".

Petty Thought of the Day: Foodie

People who call themselves "foodies" bother me. Maybe it's the irony of self-pronouncement--like describing yourself as "attractive" or "classy"...kinda makes you neither. Or maybe it's the sound of the word itself that I find so irksome, like "moist" or "sniff" or "squirt". Let me stop.
